Debra lives in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, with her wife Lisa Miller (a photographer and graphic designer) and kids, Thryn Hare (studying Sign Language Interpretation at Saint Paul College) and George Hare (a freshman at the University of Manitoba studying engineering). They enjoy the companionship of two dogs and a parrot.
Debra is a watercolorist who is honored to have studied with the Master Cheng-Khee Chee through the Split Rock Arts program at the University of Minnesota. Debra’s work is influenced by a combination of eastern and western saturated wet styles and methods. She is inspired by Cheng-Khee’s observation that “A substance following its nature creates beauty.”
Debra has a long standing Zen Buddhist mindful meditation practice. She spent a month following the path of the Buddha in northern India, a journey that culminated in Bodh Gaya (an international place of pilgrimage for Buddhists). She is a member of the Mindful Engagement group sponsored by Common Ground Meditation Center, where she sits and learns with others working to advance social justice in keeping with the eightfold path. She is a graduate of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction program.
Debra enjoys kayaking, biking, and tennis. As an aquarius, she loves being in and around water. On vacations in the Outer Banks NC or Mexico, she can often be found reading while sitting in the edge of the surf.
